‘I photograph bodies most of the time but I like to see something abstract or organic in something which is shaped and somehow unmodifiable by nature. The body which doesn’t looks like a body is what attracts me the most. Artists like Hans Bellmer, Max Ernst, Bacon, Giacommeti are really inspiring for me.’

Born in Paris 90 years ago, Guy Bourdin was one of a mere handful of fashion photographers of the twentieth-century who radically and inventively shaped the genre.
Bourdin began working for French Vogue in the mid-1950s. From the outset, his approach to fashion photography was ambitious and provocative, combining exquisite photographic style with intriguing narratives.
His ability to create seductive images that introduced psychological tension into the scope of typically anodyne depictions of fashion was at its peak in the 1970s. Bourdin’s influence has continued since his death in 1991, and a revival of his style and iconography has pervaded fashion photography throughout the past twenty years.
